A 100% Gripe Post about Personal Phone Calls

I would think that anyone who works in a pharmacy would tell their friends and family to: (a) avoid calling me at work , (b) if you do call me, the chances are very good that I won't be able to have more than a 15-second conversation with you, and (c) call me on my lunch or break, IF I get one.... better yet, I'll call you.

When you're calling a pharmacy, you are calling a place where the phone rings constantly. There are some people who get so many calls from their kids or spouse I think to myself, DON'T you people TALK to each other AT HOME? Sure, I know some personal calls at work are necessary, but some etiquette needs to apply -- keep it short, don't stand in the middle of the pharmacy where every customer who's waiting can HEAR that you're on a personal call WHILE they wait, and maybe find a few minutes where you can go in the back room and use your own cell phone. I've had both pharmacists and techs settle in for long, leisurely chats punctuated by uproarious laughter while a roomful of pissed-off patients glares at them (they are oblivious, however). If THEY were the patient waiting, they would be the first to complain.

I even had the boyfriend of a co-worker get pissed because he was on hold too long! Called back, said "I'm STILL waiting for (girlfriend), and I've ALREADY been on hold."

Oh NO, you didn't just say that!! Time for a little chat with your girlfriend about what she does for a living...

I hate the telephone, more than ever since the company installed a new phone with a ring that sounds like a slot machine paying off. there is no turning it down. I even hate the phone at my house. I have explained to my friends that the phone to me is a necessary evil. I have one because I must. I dont like long chatty conversations unless you are standing in front of me in my living room. If you call me, expect I will be short and to the point. Hearing the phone ring is like fingernails on the chalkboard now. There. I feel better.

Personal phone calls at work which amount to leisure time on the clock are despicable, especially to the other workers who are working their beamers off, but on the other side of the coin...because pharmacy schedules can be so unpredictable, it does behoove the co-worker to inform that a phone call has been received for a particular person. I have had idiotic co-workers not even tell me someone called, when I was standing right in front of them!

Then, there is the problem of personal issues, too. 'So and so called for you' broadcasted throughout the pharmacy department is not cool. And, the manager that puts a red letter from the boss or subpoena to show up in court (hand-delivered by the sheriff's deputy, but already opened) in your 'mailslot' has grounds for calling for tampering with the 'mail'?

Personal phone calls? Taken inside a retail pharmacy department, the central maelstrom of the primary pit of hell, where ALL oarsmen rowing across the River Styx MUST be available to pull their weight? You'd better be Johnny Mnemonic, and have the phone implanted somewhere just north of your temporal lobe. I wouldn't want to see or hear it happen.

I think the only 2 personal phone calls I've seen that haven't pissed me off in the last 6 months were: someone's father was in the ED with a heart attack but was going to be fine and another was someone's brother was home safe (nasty accident with person ejected from the car, same carand color the brother was driving.) Those I don't really mind, the rest you can wait till later. I'm more willing to let it not get to me if it's late and we are dead, with someone's kid calling to let them know they are home safe from someplace because the other parent is not around (either not around period or on something like a business trip someplace on the other side of the country).
